Individual Counselling

I offer individual sessions that are client-directed, meaning the structure and content will vary from session to session depending upon your concerns and emotional state that day.

That said, the way I work seeks to find an ongoing balance between gaining insight and implementing new skills.

With increased insight into our own feelings and behaviours we can gain self-awareness, self-compassion and self-knowledge. However without skills we can often struggle to integrate this new insight into action, leaving us feeling increasingly aware of our distress but decreasingly able to manage it.

Therefore individual sessions aim to provide a blend of:

  • exploring and processing emotions/experiences

  • pscyhoeducation

  • learning new skills

  • trouble shooting new skills

  • responding to what arises in the moment

The amount of time spent on these will depend very much on you as an individual and our collaboration.

What will we talk about?

There is no rule about what we can and cannot discuss. Anything that has an impact on your quality of life or relationship with yourself is valid and welcome.

Individual Session Misconceptions

Starting therapy is understandably daunting, for many of us it’s a chance to voice deeply personal concerns, feelings or stories for the first time.

To remove unnecessary pressure, here are some important reminders of what will not be expected of you.

You do NOT:

  • need to know where to begin

  • need to be able to perfectly articulate what is concerning you

  • have to trust your therapist straight away

  • have to share your whole life story in the first session

  • need to share anything you do not wish to

  • need to know what '“approaches” or “modalities” suit you best

  • need to have an “aha!” moment every session

  • need to continue with therapy if it is not working for you

  • need to continue with therapy if you are not feeling a connection with your therapist
